Job Advert Summary
The Public Health, Societies & Belonging (PHSB) Division within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, three-quarters of which are donor-funded. The PHSB division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, wellbeing and promote a socially just and cohesive society.

PHSB requires the services of a Freelancer to publish PHSB’s client reports and research reports and produce these into high-quality books over a period of 24 months as needed.
Minimum Requirements
Key Requirements:
The candidate is expected to have extensive scientific publishing experience in the area of social sciences, specifically in the production of PHSB relevant outputs and a willingness and ability to work to set and tight deadlines within specifications . In addition:
- At least 10 years of relevant professional experience as a publisher of high quality English language scientific publications;
- Proven project management track record to project manage production and printing of scientific publications;
- Network of editors that will provide language editing for all scientific publications;
- Experience in overseeing of infographic summaries of research findings;
- Ability to provide guidance on publications for different audiences;
- High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation;
- Temperament to cope with a pressurised, deadline driven work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
The scope of work and expectations of the Freelance Publisher will include the following, but is not limited to:
- Manage Editorial services:
- Content editing – ensuring the end product is professionally written and accurate;
- Language editing – assess drafts for English linguistic quality (checking for grammar, syntax, and consistent use of terminology and style), correct errors, and supply a certificate attesting that a language edit was completed;
- Technical editing – ensuring consistency with font style and size and specified document formatting requirements;
- Editing and formatting tables of contents, tables of figures and list of appendices, list of references
- Proof reading – checking for typos, spelling errors, and formatting errors, and ensuring citations and figures are accurate and cross-checked;
- Developing infographic material using contents of reports and publications
- Liaise with authors to address any editorial amendments;
- Management of the production of reports/books will include the following, but is not limited to:
- Typesetting
- Cover design
- Indexing
- Formatting
- Sourcing and editing of stock photos and images
- Entire printing process
- Delivery to HSRC offices as required
- Registration of ISBN numbers for reports
